Hey Bret: Given your discussion of gaming practices, a great read for you is James Gee's What Video Games Have to Teach Us about Learning and Literacy (Palgrave, 2003), not to mention the recent issue of Computers and Composition Online on Reading Games at http://www.bgsu.edu/cconline/gaming_issue_2008/ed_welcome_gaming_2008.htm. Given Selfe's emphasis on multimodality, your implicit suggestion that games as both a reading and writing process impact our literate consciousness seems right on to me.
